Abstract

A study of depression in diabetes mellitus : analysis from rural hospital, India

Objective: The purpose of this study to analyze the frequency of depression in Diabetes Mellitus and its correlation with demographic details like age, sex, domicile, literacy, socioeconomic status, marital status, life style and duration of Diabetes.Research Design/Methods: The study was conducted in Akash Hospital, Devanahalli on OP/IP Diabetic patients over a period of 5 months. Patients were assessed with Montgomery Asberg Depression Scale (MADRS) which was a 10 questionnaire, multiple choice self reportyinventories.Results: Among the study population 11.6% of the patients had co morbid depression with more prevalence in females when compared to males. The demographic analysis revealed that in males the depression incidence is higher in urban population than rural, and with low socioeconomic status and in patients with Diabetes of more than 5 yrs duration.Conclusion: The study concluded that co morbidity of depression is prevalent in Diabetic population with 3stime’s higher frequency and severity than the general population.
