Objective: The present study was conducted to investigate the anti-diabetic potential of Gloriosa superba Linn. leaves extract.
Methods: Gloriosa superba leaf extract (GSLE) at doses 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg was administered to glucose (1 mg/kg) loaded rats. Streptozotocin induced diabetic rats were also investigated with same doses of the extract for 21 days. Various biochemical parameters like cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoproteins (HDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL), total proteins, urea, creatinine, serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and body weight were also analyzed. On the 21st day, the animals were sacrificed for histopathological examination.
Results: A significant (P<0.01) reduction in blood glucose level was observed at 150 and 300 mg/kg doses of extract in glucose loaded as well as STZ induced diabetic rats. The extract also showed significant increase in the body weight and HDL levels and decrease in serum cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, urea, SGPT and SGOT levels.
Conclusion: The results show that GSLE possess potential anti-diabetic activity.
