This field has rapidly evolved over the past few decades due to advances in DNA sequencing technology, bioinformatics, and computational analysis. The ability to sequence and analyse microbial genomes has revolutionized our understanding of the diversity, evolution, and function of microorganisms in the environment, in human health and disease, and in biotechnology.
