Dr. Jianqi Cui

Dr. Jianqi Cui
Ningxia Medical University, Ningxia Key Laboratory for Cerebrocranial Diseases, P.R. China

Professor Jianqi Cui was born in Xi?an, Shaanxi province, PR China in Aug 28, 1957. He received the B. S. degree in stomatology from Xi?an Medical University, Xi?an, Shanxi PR China in 1983, the M. S. degree in Biochemistry from the same University as above in 1986, and the Ph. D. degree in Biochemistry from the Beijing Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, the Academy of Military Medical Sciences in 1994.

Dr. Cui joined the faculty of the Department of Stomatology at Jincheng Hospital in September, 1986 after he got his MS degree from Xi?an Medical University and in this hospital he worked as a clinical doctor in dentistry and oral-facial-mandibular surgeon for 5 years till 1991 when he went to Beijing Institute of Basic Medical Sciences for further advanced studies and also he was promoted as attending doctor (attending doctor in the hospital in China is equal to the assistant professor in the University) in 1989. He got his Ph. D degree in Biochemistry from this Institute in Aug. 1994 and in the same year he was promoted as associate chief physician (equal to associate professor in the university) in Jincheng Hospital. In the end of August, 1994, he went to USA for a Postdoctoral fellowship in University of Dentistry and Medicine of New Jersey (UMDNJ) in Newark. After a period work in the institute of dentistry in Dental School in UMDNJ, he finished the research work in Dental School and transfer to Jefferson Cancer Institute in Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia to start to work on breast cancer supervised by Dr. Veena Rao till 2001 when Dr. Rao moved to Georgia. At these years when he participated in the research of breast cancer, he focused on the breast cancer susceptible gene BRCA1. As a postdoctoral fellow in Thomas Jefferson University and Hahnemann University, He was engaged in the study of oncogene and breast cancer to investigate the mechanism of BRCA protein in developing and generating human breast cancers, especially in posttranscriptional level, to explore the interaction of these proteins in the cell signal transduction. His work elucidated the biological functions of two alternated spliced BRCA1 protein, BRCA1a and BRCA1b, and their roles in tumorigenicity of breast cancer. His research work has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as "Oncogene", "Oncology Report" and "J cell Physiology", etc.
From the end of 2001, he went to Pharmaceuticals for the further study and he joined GSK and MBS to study the diabetes, hypertension and published his research work in "Circulation",  "Diabetes" and "the FASEB journal".

From 2003, he came back to the University to do the research work again and he joined the Center of Neurovirology and Cancer Biology in Temple University as an associate scientist from May 2003. In these period he expanded his research scope including neurodegenerative diseases, especially the transcriptional regulation of APP gene expression associated with Alzheimer?s disease. He found a transcriptional activator Pur alpha which could down-regulate the APP gene expression and another transcriptional factor Egr-1 which could up-regulate APP gene expression. He successfully constructed a series of luciferase reporter constructs which contain different APP promoter deletions with which the mechanism of the regulation on APP gene expression by Pur alpha has been precisely investigated. Based on the research of transcriptional regulation, the Pur alpha knock out mouse which established in this lab was also employed in this study to further verify and confirm the effects of Pur alpha in regulation of APP gene expression. At the same time, he also participated in the research work on HIV-1 associated protein Vpr and to investigate the role of Vpr on cell cycle arrest as well as the mechanism of apoptosis induced by Vpr. At this period, his research work has been published on JAD, J Cell Physiol, Cell Cycle, Oncogene, Journal of General Virology, etc.

He joined the faculty of Ningxia Medical University (NXMU), Yinchuan, Ningxia, P.R. China in Mar. 2010 as a Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, School of Basic Medical Sciences and appointed as the deputy managing director of Ningxia Key Laboratory of Cerebrocranial Diseases, Incubation Base of the National Key Laboratory. As PI or co-investigator on several Province- and NSFC-funded grants as well as the national 973 projects. He laid the groundwork for the proposed research by developing effective measures for the proposed projects and by establishing strong ties with hospitals that will make it possible to recruit and track participants over time, In addition, He successfully administrated the projects (e.g. staffing, research protections, budget), collaborated with other researchers, and produced several peer-reviewed publications from each project. He is also in charge of the editing the book "Insular cortex epilepsy" as an associate editor and the book "Alzheimer?s disease" as a chief editor.

Professor Cui?s major research interests include Neuroscience, neurobiology, neurosurgery, neurodegeneration, Alzheimer?s disease, epilepsy, glioma and cognitive diseases. So far he has published more than 50 academic papers and supervised the thesis studies. And he also received many academic awards for his outstanding research.

Dr. Cui was a senior member of the Chinese Association of Biochemistry from 1991 to 1994 and renewed from 2010 to now, member of American Association for the Advancement of Science from 1996 to 2009, Associate member of American Association for Cancer Research from 1996 to 2001, member of International Society of NeuroVirology from 2003 to 2007, and right now, he is the member of Chinese Association of Physiology and the member of Chinese Association of Neuroscience.
