Levator advancement for repairing congenital blepheroptosis for all grades of levator function

Abstract:

Background and objective: Levator aponeurosis advancement is an effective technique to correct blepheroptosis when the levator function is Fair to good. The objective is to evaluate the outcome of levator advancement for repairing congenital blepheroptosis for all grades of levator function Methods : This is a prospective case series study conducted in Rizgary teaching hospital and CMC private hospitals in Erbil -Iraq from June 2011 to July 2019. The data of 58 patients affected by congenital blepheroptosis with poor to good levator function that underwent unilateral or bilateral levator advancement through the standard approach were included. Final outcome measures included postoperative eyelid height, contour, and symmetry. Results: The degree of ptosis was mild to moderate in 39 patients (67%), while it was severe in 19 patients(33%). Maximum levator resection was performed in all patients with severe ptosis and in patients with moderate ptosis with poor levator function. The patient satisfaction was 85% for those with fair to good levator function and 50% for those with poor levator function. Conclusions: The levator advancement for congenital ptosis is effective even with poor levator function and replaced in our practice the traditional fascial sling. Dr. Jalal Hamasalih Fattah is a Assistant professor in Plastic surgery and head of plastic surgery unit at the college of medicine/HMU in Erbil-Iraq. Graduated from college of medicine Salahaddin university in 1994 in Erbil. Got High Diploma in General surgery in 2002. Got Iraqi Board in plastic and reconstructive surgery in 2008 . Got European Board in Plastic, reconstructive , and aesthetic surgery in 2010 in Switzerland. Works as a plastic surgeon at Rizgary teaching hospital and CMC Private hospital in Erbil. Member of ISRAS, ASPS, ISAPS, and KSPS. Director of Erbil center of KBMS of plastic surgery. He has Fourteen published articles in the fi eld of plastic surgery.
