Abstract:

Introduction: The etiological diagnosis of pneumonia is still a heat for physician involved in emergency departments. Antimicrobial resistance, in fact, depend mainly by unadequate use of antibiotics. So, easy and fast tests to allow a right antimicrobial diagnosis in patients with pneumonia in emergency department are welcome. Materials and methods: We describe a case of pneumonia performed in emergency department with support of a film array pneumonia panel (PneumoPlus©) able to identify nucleic acids of different bacterial or viral agents. Results: This clinical approach was successful for early diagnosis and treatment. Discussion: This approach facilitated not only early diagnosis but also early treatment, adequate antibiotic drugs, reduction of bacterial resistance, reduction of hospital stay and healthcare costs.
